Does Seed Co sell yellow maize?

Yes! SeedCo has 3 yellow maize varieties, namely SC 506 with a potential of 6 metric tonnes (120x 50kg bags) per hectare yield and SC602 and SC608 with a potential of 13 metric tonnes (260 x 50 kg bags) and 14 metric tonnes per hectare respectively. Yellow maize varieties produce sweet green mealies and are suitable for livestock feed. If one would like to grow it to full maturity it takes 130-136 days to mature.

How can we effectively attain the recommended yield potentials?

There is no substitute to the right variety, and that’s why seed co always emphasizes on maturity series relative to intended area of production because water resource is a highly dependent factor. Then plant at the right time to optimize water use, provide right fertilizer at the right time and keep the crop weed free and healthy. Once the crop is healthy and well fed to help it achieve its required grain filling, then you get potential yields.

How is soya beans grown from planting to harvesting?

Get the correct SeedCo variety for your area. Varieties such as SC Safari, SC Samba, SC Semeki and now SC Sepa and SC Squire are stable across environments. Prepare you land to allow for effective seed soil contact at planting. Plant soybean in moist soils when the rain has stabilized generally between mid-November to mid-December to achieve seed soil contact. Do not late plant soybean because it is day length or light sensitive. Soybean reproductive stage should not be when days are short.

Soybean is a legume and provides excellent crop rotation with maize. One may use fertilizer with some inoculum obtainable with instructions from chemical fertilizer companies. All SeedCo varieties provide some period of not less than three weeks from physiological maturity before shuttering (grain dispersal). Shuttering can be a major cause of field loss. All seed co soybean varieties yield between 3 and 6 tones per hectare.

Is it safe to use herbicides on Seed Co varieties?

Commercial farmers use herbicides on seed co soybean varieties and have succeeded.

Where else can we buy Seed Co maize seed apart from your depots? And how can we know that they are your agents?

From our many registered agro dealers spread throughout the country. These have seed Seller’s Licenses issued by Seed Control and Certification Institute.

How can I become a Seed Co agent?

For one to become an agent of Seed Co, the following are the pre-requisite:

  • A seed seller’s license (obtained from Seed Control and Certification Institute-SCCI)
  • A trading license
  • A tax clearance certificate from ZRA
  • Letter of recommendation from the bank stating account details
  • Possession of a well-ventilated storage facility
  • Sign a SeedCo stockists contract

How much fertilizer do I need to put in my field for Seed Co varieties?

Depends on target yield and soil fertility status. Clay soils are thirsty while sandy soils are hungry. The basic recommended levels are 200 kg basal D/C plus 200kgs urea per hectare Note that maize varieties respond positively to increased fertilizer and other crop management factors.

How many cobs does one kernel produce (giving specifications with varieties)?

All our current maize varieties produce a single cob, so one kernel will produce one cob.

What is the effect of applying insufficient fertilizer on Seed Co seed?

Insufficient fertilizer will give below potential grain yield

When is it recommended to apply fertilizer?

Basal fertilizers do not move in the soil, while straight or top-dress fertilizer move in the soil. Most fertilizers are water soluble. Basal fertilizers are better applied to a soil depth where the crop roots will reach it. Basal fertiliser is applied at the time of planting and top dressing fertiliser after 4-6 weeks of germination.

What are the estimated yields for Seed Co varieties in 50kg bags?

Potential grain yields will depend on variety, environment and management factors. Early maturing varieties have a short grain filling period and have a lower yield potential. The progression is from early to late (hare, monkey, zebra, lion, elephant). The late varieties have a higher grain feeling period and tend to yield higher.

Can a farmer plant left-over hybrid seed to plant the next season?

Left-over hybrid seed is what is referred to as re-cycled seed. This has detrimental effect on the next crop yield because some plants will have self-pollinated and will result in small plant progenies (offspring) in the next generation which will give small cobs and reduce the grain yield potential.

How many times is a farmer supposed to weed his field?

As much as there are weeds because weeds will compete with the crop for fertilizer, space, light and other factors required for good crop growth and optimum grain production.

How many seeds of Seed Co varieties is a farmer supposed to put per station?

It is ideal to plant one seed per planting station to reduce plant competition for nutrients, space and light.

Is it wrong to mix D compound and urea when applying on a plant?

It is detrimental because D compound is required by the plant during early growth stage for total plant establishment relative to urea which is required for the reproductive stage for grain filling support.

Are Seed Co varieties graded?

Yes! Our varieties are graded to provide clients with desired quality.

What spacing should be left between station when planting Seed Co seed?

The seed spacing between stations depends on the desired final plant stand by the farmer. 25 cm will give about 50,000 plants per hectare while 30 cm will give about 44,000 plants per hectare. Spacing between plants will also depend on how much fertilizer the farmer will provide to the crop to take care of competition for food nutrients.

Does Seed Co sell any other crops other than maize and soya beans?

Yes! Seed Co embraces cultural and social responsibilities. While we do appreciate the need for production of our starch staple crop – maize and the need for quality cooking oil from the soybean, we realize also the need for bread from wheat and empowering resource poor farmers in the drought areas of Zambia who need sustenance from sorghum meal obtainable sorghum variety. Vegetable preparation using groundnuts is also appreciated by providing groundnuts varieties such as Orion, Mwenje and Nyanda. To complement protein sources seed co also provides varieties of regular beans such as Bounty.

How do I care for my soya beans after planting?

Soya beans are particularly sensitive to weed competition during the first six weeks of the season. Control weeds adequately during this period.Soya beans are also very susceptible to drought during the pod- filling stage. This is identified when the pods on the upper nodes of the main stems are 2 cm long and the small seeds are visible in the pods. If possible, irrigate the land as it can produce large yield increase. Scout for semi looper caterpillars (these are controlled by an insecticide spray in severe cases) and rust in the crop (apply fungicide for rust at flowering stage).
